Etsy Tags Generator: How to Choose Your 13 Tags, With Examples by Product
Etsy gives you 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters. To use them well, fill all 13 with multi-word phrases a shopper would actually type, skip anything your category and attributes already cover, and spread the tags across different angles: what the item is, what it's made of, its style, its use and who it's for. A tags generator gets you a first draft in seconds; the rules below tell you what to keep.
Etsy's tag rules at a glance
A tag is a word or short phrase that describes your item, and Etsy matches tags with shoppers' searches. Before you generate or write anything, these are the rules Etsy publishes in its Help Center and Seller Handbook.
| Rule | What Etsy says |
|---|---|
| How many | Up to 13 tags per listing. Etsy recommends using all 13: each one is another chance to match a search. |
| Length | Up to 20 characters per tag. |
| Characters | Letters, numbers and spaces. Apostrophes and hyphens work inside a tag but can't start it. Accented letters such as é, ñ or ü are accepted. |
| Phrases | Multi-word phrases beat single words. One phrase like "linen napkins" does more work than "linen" and "napkins" in two slots. |
| Variety | Make the 13 tags as different from each other as possible. |
| Categories and attributes | They act like tags. You don't need to repeat an exact category or attribute phrase in your tags. |
| Plurals | Etsy matches word stems, so you don't need both singular and plural versions. |
| Misspellings | Don't add deliberate typos: search already handles common misspellings. |
| Language | Write tags in your shop's language. Etsy translates them when matching searches; if you translate your listings yourself, you can translate tags too. |
| Accuracy | Like titles and descriptions, tags must describe the item truthfully. |
How to choose your 13 tags, step by step
A good set of tags covers different angles of the same item. Etsy's own advice is to describe what the item is, how it's made and who it's for, and to think about style, occasions, needs and size. Here is a method that turns that into 13 phrases.
Set the category and attributes first
Pick the most specific category, then every attribute that applies (color, material, occasion, room…). Etsy treats them like tags, which frees your 13 slots for other phrases. If an attribute doesn't offer your exact shade, choose the closest option and put the precise word in a tag: Etsy's example is a lemon-colored scarf set to Yellow, with "lemon scarf" as a tag.Name the item the way buyers do
Write down two or three ways a shopper would call it, including synonyms and regional terms. Etsy connects some variants on its own, such as "jewelry" and "jewellery", but not all of them.Add materials and techniques
What it's made of and how: "hand stamped ring", "reclaimed wood frame", "hand embroidered". Only what's true.Add style
Pair an aesthetic with a product word: "boho wall hanging", "minimalist planter", "mid century lamp".Add use, need and place
The problem the item solves or the room it goes in: "desk organizer", "entryway hooks", "travel jewelry case".Add recipients and occasions
Etsy's help center names tags as the right place for buyer-minded phrases like "gift for her", which it advises keeping out of titles. Only use occasions the item genuinely suits.Add size or shape when it matters
"small hoop earrings", "oversized tote bag", "mini planter". Scale is part of what some shoppers type.Check and trim
Every tag at 20 characters or fewer, no near-duplicates, nothing that simply repeats your category or attributes, and single words only when no phrase fits.Review your stats and swap weak tags
Etsy suggests checking your shop stats and replacing tags that bring little traffic. Change one listing at a time so you can tell what made the difference.

Notice the pattern. Each set mixes what the item is, what it's made of, its style, where or how it's used and who might buy it. The core noun appears in a few tags, but the phrases around it change so each tag can match a different search.
How the Etsnipe tags generator works
Etsnipe writes your 13 tags at the same time as the title and description, from the product data you import. The rules it follows are built on Etsy's limits: exactly 13 tags, all lowercase, 20 characters maximum, real search phrases rather than generic filler like "nice gift", and nothing about features, materials or themes that aren't in the product data.
By default, each generated tag is a two-word phrase, such as "ceramic jar" or "garden statue": short enough to stay well under the limit, specific enough to match real searches. That's Etsnipe's choice, not an Etsy rule. Etsy allows any phrase up to 20 characters, so lengthen a tag whenever a three-word phrase is what buyers actually type.
If you sell in a niche, save a tag preset in the Keywords section. The generator then picks the 13 most relevant tags from your preset first and only fills the gaps itself, so your own keyword research stays at the center.
Tag mistakes that waste slots
- Single words. "mug" and "handmade" as two tags use two slots for what "handmade mug" does in one.
- Near-duplicates. "gold hoops", "gold hoop earrings" and "hoop earrings gold" all chase the same search. Spread across angles instead.
- Repeating the category. If your listing already sits in a precise category, a tag with that exact phrase adds nothing.
- Misleading terms. Etsy prohibits misrepresenting items. Don't tag a material, style or technique the item doesn't have.
- Mixing languages. Tags belong in your shop's language; Etsy handles the translation for shoppers.
- Occasions that don't fit. Tag "wedding favor" only if people would really use the item at a wedding.
Tags work alongside your title. Since Etsy now recommends short, readable titles, tags are where synonyms, occasions and gift phrases should go. More on that in our guide to writing an Etsy SEO title.
FAQ
How many tags can you use on Etsy?
Up to 13 per listing, each up to 20 characters. Etsy recommends using all 13.
Do Etsy tags have to be single words?
No. Etsy recommends multi-word phrases: they match more specific searches and use one slot instead of several.
Do plurals and misspellings matter?
No. Etsy matches word stems, so "planner" also matches "planners", and search already handles common misspellings.
Can I put "gift" in my tags?
Yes. Etsy's help center names tags as the place for buyer-minded phrases like "gift for her". Keep them out of the title unless the occasion is essential to the item.
Can I use a tags generator?
The tool matters less than the result. Etsy asks for tags that are accurate and relevant to the item, so review every generated tag before you publish. After a change, Etsy notes it can take up to a day to show in search.
